If you want to get better at playing open drum rolls, take my 10 minute-a-day drum roll challenge for 30 days (this is free, just do it). I am encouraging everyone of my students to do this in the month of November and I guarantee it will make them and you a stronger drummer.
I have come to realize that getting good at anything requires hours of practice and focus on good technique. Think about it, if you want to run faster, you need to run. If you want to be a better cook; well, you have to spend time in the kitchen. Likewise, if you want to play faster and stronger double stroke rolls, you have to spend time on them. This is true about anything.
Take the Challenge!
Here is a quick break down of the challenge and below is a YouTube video that shows you how to do it.
Review double stroke technique before you start each session (see video and description below).
Start rolling and do it for 10 minutes (use a pace that you can do for 10 minutes and speed up or slow down as needed, like running)
Do it everyday for 30 days (I suggest designating a time, like after you brush your teeth or before lunch: attach it to another habit)
That is it! Here is a video and below that is a description of how to check your diddle technique.
Diddle Technique CheckList
Here is a quick breakdown of double stoke (diddle) technique.
Take a minute and check your grip (look at the fulcrum)
Drop/bounce the stick on the drum/pad while maintaining a solid fulcrum
Gently wrap your fingers around the rest of the stick
Isolate two beats (this is the diddle).
Watch demo above, it will help.
Here is a video on how to play double strokes.
Seriously, that is it?
Yep, that is it! You just have to dedicate the time to do it. The key to success with gaining powerful double strokes is consistency; do, it everyday and you will get better, faster, and stronger. Basically, the more you do it the better you will be. Good luck with the challenge and keep drumming.
